OUT TO SEA

When I am very old and close to the end of my life, I want my loved ones to put me in a little boat and set me out to sea. The boat will be filled with books I never got around to reading, an old hand crank phonograph with the recordings of Louis Armstrong and Glenn Gould, a box of photographs of my favorite people, and a trumpet. I will cast off and drift on the ocean, reading, listening, looking, playing and thinking of all the jokes whose punchlines I forgot. As the boat becomes a tiny dot on the horizon, there will be the distant sound of my laughter.
